What Is Lock Rekeying?

A lock rekey changes the internal pins inside the lock cylinder so the old key no longer works — without replacing the hardware. Your locksmith removes the cylinder, installs a new set of pins, and cuts new keys on the spot. Anyone with old keys is locked out. You have full control again.

Most lock rekey jobs take 15–30 minutes per lock. For a standard home with 2–3 entry doors, the whole visit is usually under an hour.

What our lock rekey service includes?

  • All entry locks rekeyed to a single key ("keying alike") — one key opens everything

  • Or separate keys for different areas if that's what you need

  • Master key options available for landlords, property managers, and multi-unit buildings

  • Extra copies cut and provided on the spot

  • Works with most residential lock brands including Schlage, Kwikset, and more

Should You Rekey or Replace Your Locks?

Rekey if:

  • You just moved into a new home or apartment

  • You lost your keys or had them stolen

  • A contractor, cleaner, or previous tenant has a copy

  • A roommate or employee with access has left

  • Your locks are in good working condition

Replace if:

  • Your locks are damaged, sticking, or worn out

  • You want to upgrade to smart locks or a high-security system

  • The lock brand is outdated and you want something better

Bottom line: If your locks are in good condition, rekeying gives you the same security as replacement — at a fraction of the cost.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Most rekeying jobs take 15–30 minutes per lock. If you have multiple locks done in the same visit — typical for a home with 2–3 entry doors — the total visit is usually under an hour.

  • Most standard residential locks can be rekeyed, including Schlage, Kwikset, and similar brands. If you're not sure whether your lock can be rekeyed, send us a photo before scheduling — we can tell you right away without a service call. If your lock turns out to be damaged or an unusual model, we'll let you know whether rekeying is possible or if replacement makes more sense.

  • Yes — this is one of the most important steps new homeowners can take. You have no way of knowing how many copies of the original keys are in circulation. Rekeying all entry locks ensures previous owners, contractors, realtors, and anyone else with old keys no longer has access to your home.

  • Yes — if your locks are compatible. Locks of the same brand (for example, all Schlage or all Kwikset) can typically be rekeyed alike so one key opens everything. If you have mixed brands, compatibility depends on the keyway. The best way to find out is to send us a photo of your locks — we'll assess them and let you know before scheduling a visit.
